How to get to Remota

Getting to Remota Patagonia Lodge

From California or New York to the edge of Torres del Paine.

The end of the world is closer than you think

There is a moment, somewhere over the Southern Cone, when the window stops showing cities and starts showing ice. Glaciers spill off the Southern Patagonian Ice Field — the largest outside the poles. Fjords cut inland like blue knife marks. And then, suddenly, three granite towers rise straight out of the steppe, catching the low sun.

That is Torres del Paine. And Remota sits 40 minutes from its gates.

Yes, it takes a day of travel to get here. That is exactly the point. Patagonia has stayed wild because it is not on the way to anywhere. What you get in return is a landscape that most travelers only see in photographs: guanacos moving across gold grasslands, condors riding the thermals at eye level, icebergs drifting down Grey Lake in shades of blue that don’t exist anywhere else, and a sky that stays light until 10 p.m. in December.

And once you land in Puerto Natales, you stop planning.
Our team meets you at the airport and takes it from there.

You will not be roughing it. Remota is an architectural landmark on the shore of the Última Esperanza Fjord — Chilean woods, local stone, floor-to-ceiling glass, an indoor pool, hot tubs and a sauna, a bar stocked with Chilean wine, and a kitchen that turns Patagonian lamb, king crab and hake into something worth the flight on its own.

How to get here from the US

Both routes end with the same flight south from Santiago. Pick the one that starts closest to home.

How to get here from California

1
Los Angeles (LAX)
2
Santiago (SCL)
3
Puerto Natales (PNT)

LATAM operates the only nonstop service between Los Angeles and Santiago, typically five to seven departures per week depending on the season, on a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Flight time is roughly 10 hours 40 minutes. Departures leave LAX mid-to-late afternoon and land in Santiago at dawn — which is ideal, because it puts you on the morning connection south with time to spare.

Flying from San Francisco, San Diego, Sacramento or San Jose? There is no nonstop to Chile from these airports. The smoothest options are:
Total door-to-door from the Bay Area is typically 17–20 hours including connections.

Insider tip

The overnight southbound flight arrives in Santiago in the early morning. If you'd rather not connect on zero sleep, spend a night in Santiago and fly to Patagonia the next day rested. Chile's wine valleys are 90 minutes away.

How to get here from New York

1
New York (JFK)
2
Santiago (SCL)
3
Puerto Natales (PNT)

LATAM flies JFK to Santiago nonstop, daily — seven departures per week. It is an evening red-eye, generally leaving between 6:00 and 8:15 p.m. and landing in Santiago around 6:30 a.m. Flight time is approximately 10 hours 35 minutes. Because Chile sits almost directly south of the East Coast, there is only a 2-hour time difference during the Patagonian summer — meaning virtually no jet lag. You lose a night, not a week.

Flying from Newark (EWR), Boston, Philadelphia or Washington, D.C.? There is no nonstop from these airports. Reliable one-stop routings run through:

The final leg: Santiago to Puerto Natales

This is the flight that drops you at our doorstep.

Route

Santiago (SCL) → Puerto Natales (PNT), Teniente Julio Gallardo Airport

Airlines

LATAM and SKY Airline

Flight time

3 hours 10 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes nonstop

Frequency

Roughly 5–7 nonstop departures per week, rising toward daily service in the December–February peak

Season

Direct service runs seasonally, approximately September/October through April

To Remota

About 15 minutes by road

Some departures route via Puerto Montt (PMC) with a brief stop, adding roughly an hour to the total. Because PNT is a small seasonal airport, schedules shift year to year — always confirm at the time of booking, and build a buffer between your international arrival and your domestic connection.

The year-round alternative: Punta Arenas

If you are traveling outside the direct-flight season, or if the Puerto Natales schedule doesn’t line up with your dates, fly instead into Punta Arenas (PUQ):

  • Santiago → Punta Arenas: about 3 hours 20 minutes
  • Served year-round, multiple times daily, by LATAM, SKY and JetSMART
  • Punta Arenas to Remota is a 3-hour drive north (about 155 miles / 250 km) through open steppe — a beautiful introduction to the region, with a good chance of spotting rheas and flamingos.

Remota provides direct transfers from both airports, PNT and PUQ. Exclusively for our guests.

From the airport, you're ours

The moment you collect your bag, the logistics end. Our driver is waiting. Transfers to and from Puerto Natales (PNT) and Punta Arenas (PUQ) airports are included in your program — at any schedule for the Adventure Program, and at set daily times for the Soft Program.

We also collect guests from the Puerto Natales bus terminal and from Cerro Castillo on the Argentine border, if you’re arriving overland from El Calafate.

Choose your Patagonia

Both include accommodation, all meals, an open bar with Chilean wines, bilingual guides, and full use of the pool, hot tubs and sauna. You decide each day’s excursion the evening before, with your guide, based on the weather. That flexibility is not a detail — in Patagonia, it is the whole strategy.

What to pack

Patagonia gives you four seasons before lunch. Sun, sleet, still air and 50-mph gusts can happen in the same afternoon. The answer is not heavy clothing — it is layers you can add and shed in seconds.

The three-layer system

  • Base layer (next to skin):2–3 merino wool or synthetic long-sleeve tops & long underwear. No cotton. It holds moisture, chills you, and takes forever to dry.
  • Mid layer (insulation):Fleece jacket or pullover. Lightweight packable down or synthetic puffy jacket.
  • Outer layer (wind and rain):Waterproof, windproof hardshell jacket with a hood — non-negotiable. Waterproof shell pants. Skip the umbrella. The wind will destroy it.

Footwear and legs

  • Broken-in waterproof hiking boots with ankle support.
  • Comfortable sneakers or casual shoes for the lodge and town.
  • 4–5 pairs of wool hiking socks.
  • 2 pairs of quick-dry hiking pants (convertible or softshell).
  • Gaiters, if you plan on longer or muddier routes.

Gear and extras

  • 20–30L daypack with a rain cover.
  • Trekking poles — they save your knees.
  • Reusable water bottle.
  • Headlamp or small flashlight.
  • Binoculars and camera with spare batteries.
  • Dry bags to protect electronics on boats.
  • Swimsuit for the indoor pool, hot tubs and sauna.
  • Blister plasters, ibuprofen, personal meds.

At the lodge

Remota is relaxed. There is no dress code. Bring something comfortable and warm for evenings — a sweater, casual pants, indoor shoes. Nobody dresses up here, and that's rather the point.

Practical tips before you fly

Passports and entry

U.S. citizens do not need a tourist visa for Chile. Bring a valid passport and keep the tourist card received on arrival.

Best time to visit

Oct–Apr is spring/summer/fall. Dec–Feb is warmest with longest days. Oct–Nov & Mar–Apr offer softer light and fewer people.

Temperatures

Summer highs 50–65°F (10–18°C), dropping to 40s°F (5–8°C) at night. Wind chill is the real factor, not the thermometer.

Time zone

Chile is 2 hours ahead of NY and 5 hours ahead of CA during summer. Jet lag is minimal — you're flying south, not east.

Money

Chilean peso. Cards widely accepted. Carry some cash for small purchases. Tipping is appreciated; 10% is customary in dining.

Electricity

Chile runs on 220V, 50Hz with type C and L plugs. Bring a European-style adapter. Most modern chargers handle dual voltage.

Connectivity

Remota has Wi-Fi. Cell coverage in Torres del Paine is patchy to nonexistent. Download maps before heading out.

Luggage limits

Domestic flights enforce limits strictly. A soft duffel plus a daypack is ideal and easier for transfer vehicles than hard cases.

Book early & Buffer

Reserve international, then domestic. Add one night in Santiago on your return leg to buffer any weather delays in the south.

Leave the itinerary loose

The guests who love Patagonia most are the ones who let the weather decide. Come with an open mind, and let us show you the park on the day it looks its best.

What an innovative hotel. Architecturally quite distinctive (and hard to describe) and quite nice. Excellent food, and wonderfully comfortable beds. The pool and hot tub have gorgeous views. We definitely recommend this as the best appointed lodging in town. The only downside is that Remota is solid 1/2 hour walk from the”downtown”, so if you want to eat anywhere but the hotel, you’ll have a bit of a hike. But it’s flat, along the waterfront and actually very pleasant.

Best service hotel in or near Puerta Natales. Our plans were delayed due to weather leaving Antarctica, but the staff at Remota rolled out the "red carpet". In terms of architecture, think New Wave meets Patagonia; I don't think there is a right-angle in the whole place. Kitchen staff outdid themselves for the holidays. Shout out to Carmen who accepted our reservation over WhatsApp. Recommend without any hesitation!

We had an amazing experience at the hotel. All rooms are sustainable, beds extremely comfortable. A highlight is the restaurant staff, great service and friendly staff. Definetly recommend this hotel

Ready when you are

Three granite towers. Four hundred miles of trails. Glaciers you can hear before you see. And one lodge, warm and waiting, forty minutes from the gates.
